A Life in Science, A Legacy in Iron
Dr. Xi Huang is a toxicologist, educator, and scientific innovator whose work spans occupational medicine, women’s health, aging, and skin science — all united by one driving question: What role does iron play in human health and aging?
He began his research career studying black lung disease among coal miners. There, he uncovered an unexpected culprit: iron, which, after being breathed into the lungs, becomes a powerful driver of inflammation, oxidative stress, and tissue damage.
This discovery led Dr. Huang from environmental health into the biology of aging. His work during the landmark Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) revealed that iron levels spike after menopause, quietly accelerating aging and weakening the skin, organs, and overall vitality.
While iron deficiency is widely recognized, excess iron remains a hidden public health issue–often overlooked by the medical community. Excess iron is also a primary driver of aging, yet is not addressed by the wellness and beauty industries. Despite spending more on healthcare than any other country, the United States continues to fortify iron in foods, unlike many countries in Europe and Japan. This contributes to iron accumulation and long-term health risks that are known in the scientific community but under-communicated to the public.
Dr. Huang believes this must change. With over 90 peer-reviewed publications, multiple patents, and numerous research awards, he is now writing a book to help consumers recognize and reduce excess iron in practical, everyday ways.
This is why he chose to write this book now. To share decades of research and thousands of scientific findings — not just with scientists, but with everyone who wants to live healthier, longer, and more vibrantly.
He is also the founder of i-On by Dr. Xi Skincare and Wellness Care, a science-based line created to support the body’s natural balance by reducing excess iron — especially through the skin, our largest organ of elimination.
Dr. Huang earned his Ph.D. in Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology from the Université Paris Diderot (Paris VII). After completing postdoctoral training at NYU School of Medicine, he joined the faculty in the Departments of Environmental Medicine and Medicine.
